Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My fundraising journey has started in memory of my mum who was diagnosed with cancer on 5th February 2014. She sadly passed away on 6th March 2014, after spending 3 weeks in hospital for an emergency hip replacement.
Her 1st meeting with her oncologist, told her that the breast cancer she had 6 years previous had come back and was at advanced stage IV and metastatic.
But after having a bronchoscopey, it turned out to be lung cancer. Lung cancer that had spread to her brain, bones and liver. We were only told that it was lung cancer 2 weeks before she died. This is despite the fact she had had several chest x-rays at 2 different hospitals, and were reviewed by at least 3 different doctors on 3 separate occasions, including a doctor at a chest clinic who told her and wrote to the gp saying everything was "fine."
They all missed the fact she had lung cancer, so there was no urgency.
She never really recovered from her emergency hip replacement and developed clots in her lung and pneumonia. We managed to get her to a hospice for her last few days and she passed away with me, her only child, and my dad at her bedside, holding her hands. She was 59 years old.
I'm therefore trying to raise money for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation who are the only UK charity wholly dedicated to Lung Cancer and look into early detection of this horrible disease. Lung cancer is like a silent killer as its detection gets missed a lot, and is now cancer's biggest killer.
I've started up this #redlipstickselfie campaign, to "Kiss Lung Cancer Goodbye" but also because my mum loved wearing red lipstick.....wherever she was, the beach, swimming, shopping, she would be wearing red lipstick. It was her signature look.
So in memory of my mum, we challenge you to take the craze of the "Selfie" to the next level, wearing red lipstick! This includes men! And it can be anywhere! The crazier the better, or it could be just in your own home. But it will all have one meaning, to Kiss Lung Cancer Goodbye!
We saw how far the "no make up" selfie went, let's see if we can do the same, or better!
Let the fun begin.....!
