Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Kingston and Richmond United Response, are charity that supports young people and adults, with a range of disabilities and mental health needs to live the life they choose. In our hub space in Teddington we usually run a number of different activities for the people we support and others in the community, however due to Covid-19 we have had to stop these activities that some many relied on.
We knew that not being able to access activities would have negative effects on the emotional and physical well-being of the people we support. To make sure this was not the case we began a hosting a range of activities on zoom; fun upbeat inactive dance and work out sessions, cook along sessions promoting health eating, mediation sessions, social groups and art workshops. It was important to us that these session would help to promote well-being in both mind and body.
One of our most successful groups before and during lockdown is our weekly art group. Studies show that engaging in creative activities can reduce stress and anxiety. We believe that creativity is a very powerful tool. The act of creating and sharing work in these session gives the people who attend a way in which to communicate worries, express interests, engage with others, promoting self confidence and self worth and most importantly it can be used as form of escapism, a place to release tensions and worries. “ I love attending the Friday art session its helps me to relax and makes me happy to see my friends”.
As most of the people who attend are at home they have limited art equipment to use, a anonymous donor noticed this and very kindly donated £200 to our art group so that we could provide its members with equipment. From this our Art Pack scheme was born.
Each art packs come with starter set of an A3 sketchbook, pencils, rubber, sharpener and glue. We then ask the artist to choose a speciality pack of either; watercolours, drawing inks, pastels, paints, etc.
With the generous donation we were able to present the members of our virtual art group with these packs. Seeing what a positive impact have the access to these materials and creating art work has had on our group, we now want to extend our scheme offering specialised art packs to others who may join our session, but more importantly to those who due to lack of technology are not able to. With these people we will create pack in which we will provided information about the materials, different artists and lots of fun activities for them to try with their new materials.
We also want to be able to top up the packs every few months, sending out new equipment for the artists, this opportunity to explore new mediums, will support and progress their artistic practice.
