Ken's brilliant mind was ravaged by a cruel and brutal disease. Alzheimer’s kills 1 in 5 Australians, that's 1 in 5 families faced with the ultimate torture of watching their loved one slowly disappear. There are no clever marketing campaigns for Alzheimer’s and dementia, no catchy slogans, no community fundraising, it’s a disease that society more often than not chooses to turn a blind eye. Perhaps because it is too painful to face, or perhaps because the value of an elderly life isn’t a priority. Ken was in his late 60’s when he was diagnosed. He had so much to give, he would have worked until he was 90 if he was able, he would have loved to have traveled the world again and watch his grandkids grow up. Ken himself cared for countless dementia patients, so it was a cruel twist of fate that he himself became the patient and declined so quickly. There are 472,000 Australians living with dementia and a further 1.6 million involved in their care. Currently there is no cure, no treatment to slow its progression, and an incomplete understanding of what causes the disease. But research into dementia is gathering pace and UQ's Queensland Brain Institute is leading the global hunt for a cure.
