Kara's Story

October 2019 our nine year old daughter Kara had emergency surgery for an bowel Intussusception. During surgery a tumour was discovered that turned out to be Large B Cell Lymphoma and she were admitted to Leeds Children's Oncology Unit and began Chemotherapy. 

We are aware that we are so lucky as crazy as that sounds!

Kara's tumour was found early, it was removed and her Chemo was short. There is nothing that can prepare you for the call that tells you your child has cancer, As a family we are still coming to terms with the reality of our situation. Kara has been so incredibly brave and has inspired us so much throughout this journey.  In the last year we have been helped by so many people and so many charities that is has been hard to try and give back to them all. As a family we wanted to try and make a difference and ultimately Kara chose Millie's Smiles because her bag made us smile so much. It was like receiving a gift from someone who knew exactly what we needed at one of the most awful moments in our life. As we unpacked the bag, Kara was so happy with the blanket, sweets, Elephant teddy and her bottle. I was humbled and grateful for the toiletries, the notepad and pen, thermometer...... everything in this bag made a difference to us. Then we had the moment of realising it was set up by a mum who lost her daughter Millie to cancer, Millie was the same age as Kara when diagnosed..... Her Mum Lorraine founded Millies Bags and now provides bags all children admitted to Oncology in three hospitals!

Kara has been left with life long  thyroid problems from chemotherapy, but otherwise is well and we are cautiously optimistic that this will continue.  We are so grateful to have a happy, healthy little girl xx
