Story
My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and successfully underwent treatment. Sadly, in 2001, the disease returned but this time in her bones.
Over the following years, she battled her illness with incredible courage. Despite her reluctance ever to complain, the pain occasionally got too much for her and she required various spells as an in-patient at Roxburghe House to get things under control again.
The care provided by all the staff at Roxburghe House is second to none. In addition to the medical services provided by the NHS, Friends of Roxburghe House exists as a charity to provide additional support.
Just a snapshot of some of the services the charity has funded includes:
- Arts and crafts projects
- Therapies nurse and podiatry service
- Tea, coffee and snacks for patients and visitors
- Free 24-hour bedside TV viewing
- Christmas meals and gifts
- Fleecy blankets and other comforts
- Mobility aids
- Sensors and pumps for the special mattresses
- Extending and maintaining the beautiful garden areas
- Bird seed and fat balls for the birds, squirrels and other wildlife that visit the gardens
- Volunteer drivers to transport patients to clinics and day units
My mum sadly lost her battle on 10th December 2020, but she was eternally grateful for all of the services and little comforts made available to her through Friends of Roxburghe.
Because of the current COVID situation her funeral will be limited to 20 people and it will not be possible to collect donations there. I have, therefore, set up this fundraising page with a view to raising as much money as possible for this fantastic charity. Any donation, no matter how small, would be most gratefully received. Thank you!
