WHY YOU SHOULD DONATE:

Before the COVID-19 crisis, a fundraising gala was going to be held with Global Fund for Children (GFC), in which I was going to partake in, to help with the organization of the event. It is now evident that during these challenging and unprecedented times, the gala will not be held for the time being.

Consequently, GFC is hurting and is now unable to reach its target for the summer. I have therefore decided to launch a formal campaign by reaching out via email, social media, WhatsApp, and all means possible to friends, family, classmates and people I know within my community. Any and all contribution will matter, however small or large, so please consider participating in my campaign. I and GFC would greatly appreciate it: your donation will have tremendous impact on children facing increased hardship due to Covid-19's lives.

WHAT IS GFC? If you don’t know what GFC does, let me explain briefly:

Global Fund for Children is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform the lives of the world's most vulnerable children. GFC pursues this mission by making small grants to innovative community-based organizations that provide services and programs for children that government and large aid organizations often do not reach.

Global Fund for Children work to ensure kids all around the world can live safe, educated, equitable, and empowered lives. They do this by partnering with 101 community organizations in 32 countries: ranging from protecting migrant children in Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico to supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Serbia to rescuing and rehabilitating kids from sex and labor trafficking in India and Bangladesh to providing safe, transitional housing to girls in Kenya.

THE IMPACT OF A PANDEMIC AND RACISM ON CHILDREN

Currently, in different communities, the impact of the pandemic is very heavy: to give you an example, Paulina Olvera Cáñez, Founder and Executive Director of Espacio Migrante in Mexico, shared that migrant families and children on the US-Mexico border are facing increased levels of uncertainty, lack of safe shelter, and inability to satisfy basic needs. She also mentioned the Black Lives Matter movement, and how two pandemics are seen to rise in their community – one caused by racism, and one caused by the virus. This is one of many examples in which racism, segregation and poverty are strongly impacting children in communities worldwide, especially with the pandemic.

WHY AM I DOING THIS?

-I want to raise awareness for GFC, it shows how fortunate I am to live in the manner I live, and it is not enough to simply be grateful: I believe we all need to take action by giving back to those who are not as fortunate, in a tangible manner.

-I want to promote the work of GFC as it strives to make the world a better place. It is painfully obvious that live in a very unbalanced world in terms of wealth distribution in addition to the access of basic human rights and needs (such as food and shelter). GFC is working to execute a positive and NECESSARY change, and you can all be a part of this change by donating.

HOW MUCH DO I DONATE?

First of all, any amount matters greatly to us. However, if you want any ideas on what certain amounts can do:, here are some examples:

-£50 can provide essential hygiene supplies to 10 families in Peru

-£100 can provide safe housing to a girl in Kenya

-£150 can set up a hand-washing station in areas without reliable clean water

-£200 can provide two months of internet access to 20 families in Kyrgyzstan

-£1000 can help children at a boarding school get safely home or to host families

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP IF I CANNOT DONATE, OR AFTER I DONATED?

Thank you so much for reading- I would really appreciate it if you shared this with as many people as possible, it would truly mean a lot. Even if you can't donate, the more people see this, the more people might decide to help us out. Thanks :)
