I completed this marathon for the NSPCC in 4:45:24, about 30 minutes shy of my goal. I'm not going to lie, race day was brutal because I made the near fatal error of stopping at mile 10 for the loo at which point my hip flexors completely tightened up. But I finished it regardless because of all the people who had already sponsored me...their commitment to me and the NSPCC kept me going. I am still fundraising for them for the next month because I want to help them reach their £1M mark goal. This money will transform ChildLine and help the NSPCC answer every incoming call a child at risk makes.
As most of you know, my daughter is the light of my life. Keeping kids, especially girls, safe online is of paramount importance to me. As I progress with my dissertation for Liverpool University on the effects of social media on emerging adolescent women - how being born digital shapes who these girls become and how they see themselves and interact with their peers and the world around them - I see the negative effects of social media on young kids and just how dangerous social media can be.
The NSPCC is a tremendous charity doing great work "to fight for every childhood", specifically online with its Share Aware programme as well as their online real time chat service on ChildLine. I ran this marathon to raise money to help them spread the word and get kids the access they need to programmes and people who will help keep them safe online, at home and in school. I hope you will help join in my cause and make it your own.
