We support children and their families with to complex medical needs

Story

I have been working as the activities assistant intern at The Maypole Project, a charity that supports children with complex medical needs and their families. I have worked in the office completing admin tasks, taking bookings and developing the sensory centre and working face to face with children who have various needs and or disabilities, some life limiting.

I am raising funds to give back to the charity. I would love to raise money for activities and also sessional staff funds for activities to run. Every donation counts!

Me and Artim have also signed up for TOUGH MUDDER in September and training has already begun. We really wanted an active challenge to work towards this year as a focus at the gym and so we plucked up the courage to sign up earlier on in the year. Check back to our page to see updates of training and please sponsor us!

It has been the most incredible experience and due to the charity being non-profit, small and local to my community I have definitely been able to see the outcome of the charities hard work and the direct impact it has had on people and their families.

I have learnt so much about working within a charity, activities for children, how to work with children who have various needs, fundraising, counselling and therapies and the amount of determination needed for a small charity to keep going. Not only that but to succeed in what they do. The way the staff and volunteers work with children makes me so so happy, and I am so lucky to have learnt how to go the extra mile for each individual - which is so key to what we do.

I have also taken part in holidays outings and activities where we have visited wildlife centres, stables, chessington world of adventures, london, sailing, trampoline parks and many more. These sessions have enabled me to develop skills working with children with a range of complex medical needs including down’s syndrome, epilepsy, adhd, autism, genetic disorders and life threatening conditions as well as having the amazing opportunity to work with a lovely team of staff and volunteers. I have also delivered presents to maypole families for Christmas with Santa and delivered Easter eggs with the Easter bunny - so of course so lucky to have met the important guys too!

My time at The Maypole Project has been amazing! Being a part of the activities, we deliver to children with a range of complex medical needs and disabilities has been incredible and I am so grateful to be part of a team that delivers well planned and personalised care, that is most importantly great fun for everyone involved.

From the start of my internship, I was welcomed into such a friendly team, who each took their time to make me feel at ease and confident in my work responsibilities. This has meant I have gained valuable experience in each aspect of the charity and have been pushed out of my comfort zones to achieve things I wouldn't have felt confident in doing before.

I have participated in public speaking such as presenting assembly’s at schools and learnt how to communicate in various ways. For example I have trained to learn Makaton levels 1&2 I have also will have completed a BTEC level 4 course in Positive behaviour which has not only helped me support the children and young people in my current role but will help me in my future careers too.

The internship has meant so much for me, not only providing me with experience but has helped to shape who I am as a person today and so being able to give back would be amazing.
