Story
It is my birthday soon, and like many others I will likely find myself at home with a bottle of wine and no friends (some might say this was actually my dream situation).
I'm a little sad to not be able to celebrate with friends. Sad as I am, I still find myself with plenty of you lovely people to talk to, enough money and a stable job to go back to when this is all over. Many people aren't as fortunate.
While no community is spared from corona-challenges, some have particular needs. As many of you know, I have been working with Opening Doors London for four years now. ODL work with older LGBT+ people who find themselves isolated and in need of a friend.
Older LGBT+ people already face unique challenges. They are less likely to have family networks to support them. They are more likely to be living with chronic health challenges, like HIV (this isn't the Queer community's first global health crisis). Heart-breakingly, many older LGBT+ people go 'back into the closet' in older age, with fewer and fewer people with whom to be their authentic selves. When you add in self-isolation in the time of coronavirus, this is a toxic mix.
There are thousands of worthy causes to give your money to, but all I ask is that you consider donating the price of the two drinks (one for me, one for you) we might have shared on my birthday.
They say charity begins at home. Well, you are all at home, so give me some money. xxx
Note: I know many of you find yourselves in precarious financial situations at the moment. Please know that I understand if you are not in a position to donate at this time. Big love to you. x
