Story
My mother was diagnosed with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) at the age of 61. As a family we were scared of what lay ahead for my mums future. At 71, her eGFR was 8 & it was deemed necessary to start dialysis. My mum (an ex nurse) decided to have Peritoneal Dialysis at home. She was placed on the National Kidney Transplant Waiting list. Eventually after 2 years of waiting, at the beginning of April 2017, she received "the call" from Liverpool Hospital to say that they'd found a match. We were all elated & felt this would be a fresh start at life & an end to dialysis for my mum. Devastatingly after a harrowing 6 months in hospital, on 1st October 2017, my lovely, kind and courageous mum lost her battle. She passed away. We will love you forever, my lovely mum.
My brother was diagnosed with acute kidney failure in October 2016. He received life saving emergency haemodialysis the same day & went on to receive it 3 days a week for the next year & a half. Once stable he was placed on the National Kidney Transplant Waiting list & further down the line he joined the Kidney Share Scheme.
On 19th June 2018, he had a successful transplant at St Georges Hospital. After 7 days he was discharged & we are 4 years on now & he is doing so well. My mum would have been so relieved that he made it. We will forever be grateful to the surgeons, doctors, nurses & all the support staff involved. With a special mention to Sarah Heap, Renal Surgeon of St Georges Hospital & Tracy Norton-Smith, Transplant Co-ordinator at St Helier University Hospital. Thank you for everything you all did & continue to do.
