My 2016 Mile challenge
I started the year training for the Brighton Marathon to raise funds for Addiction, which I did on 17th April, as I was training an idea evolved…! I thought why not continue running and see if I can raise £2,016 pounds by running 2016 miles in 2016, well with your fantastic support and generosity my justgiving page has become a team effort, Nigel running the London and Mel running the Palma 10K we smashed the £2016 pound so now I’m trying to double it!
My challenge; ‘To Run 2016 in 2016’ it works out at approximately 5.5 miles a day, and so far it is going well (587 miles to date), you can be part of it by joining me to run a mile at some point in the year, I’ve still got 1,429 miles to do (23rdApril) or the challenge will end on Sat 31st Dec, when I plan to run my final 3.1 miles at a park run somewhere in south Manchester, join me for that final run.
Why am I doing this?
I lost Callum at 23 because he didn't understand just how dangerous taking drugs can be. I’m raising cash for Addaction, to help them support adults, children, young adults and older people to make positive behavioural changes. Whether that's with drugs, alcohol or mental health and wellbeing, they’re here to help people improve their lives in ways they never thought possible.
My hope is that I can stop another family going through the pain of losing someone so young and in such a pointless way. If I can stop it happening to one other person it may help me and Cal's family make some sense of it.
My son Callum was a lovely person and I miss him so very much, he was no angel and had a knack of finding himself in difficult situations, ‘Stupid is as stupid does’, was the saying I had for Callum, even had it engraved on his iPod, I loved him for that. Callum had a very caring side, he was always polite and well-mannered when he smiled it was infectious and wonderful to see and he would help you if he could, he would take you under his wing if you looked like you needed help, although it was someone else’s wing he needed himself, he would give his last penny, then go see his Nanna and get it back!
Cal never did run and I never got the chance to go for a run with him, but I’m sure he would have been great, I felt him with me every step of the way when I ran Brighton.
Finally, thank you for visiting my JustGiving Page in memory of Callum. If you’d like to make a donation to Addaction I’d be very grateful. Thank you.
