Defibrillator appeal

Gloves, needles, bandages, clean linen, running water, blood sugar monitors and a defibrillator. These are the most basic stock for medical treatment in any surgery, clinic or hospital. But in Zimbabwe they are not available.

In the last two weeks, there have been two tragic and unnecessary deaths in a rural town in Zimbabwe. Sipho, an influential community leader, (57) died of complications of extremely high blood sugar levels. When he was too ill for his wife to take care of at home, he was taken to the provincial hospital.  But the hospital could not care for him either. They did not have even the most basic equipment -there was no blood sugar monitor and his wife had to scour the local community for one.  He was admitted to ICU but there was no medicine to treat his condition. There wasn’t even sufficient food, as his wife had to try to feed him daily. He died a few days later.

Another tragic event occurred in the town a few days after when a toddler fell into a swimming pool and drowned. The medics were there in minutes and CPR was administered immediately. They had a defibrillator but it was broken and the little girl was not saved.

Doctors in the country have been pressing the government for change — including through strikes — demanding better salaries, needed supplies and functioning medical equipment. In public hospitals, doctors are working in arduous conditions, forcing some to operate with their bare hands, at worst, and nonsterile gloves, at best, when essential supplies run out. When a sick person comes to hospital they are provided with a list of supplies for patients to buy in advance, from face masks to anesthesia. In Bulawayo water rationing has forced the hospitals to scale back on surgeries.

We would like to equip the Chinhoyi community with some basic survival equipment including a defibrillator, SATs monitor, and Blood Glucose tester and basic training for key responders.

This equipment will be based with Local key responders who will receive training in how to use the equipment. It will save lives!

Our initial goal is to raise £5000 which will cover the equipment and training. Please help us raise this to provide basic survival  equipment to save lives.
