Story
I have created this page to raise awareness and also show how grateful we are for those who work at st Luke’s Hospice who strive to ensure you leave this world peacefully.
12 months ago my brother in law was diagnosed with stage 4 Bowel Cancer. This came as a huge shock to me and my family. Never in a million years did we think it would be ‘our’ family that would have to endure this awful news.
We remained positive and were told that the cancer could not be cured but could be managed.
Unfortunately this diagnosis and treatment plan came at a time when the country were hit with the Pandemic Covid . Appointments were done over the phone , the numerous hospital admissions meant that Daniel could only be with the same person for an hour a day. . Every week we were told something different until eventually we were told in June this year the cancer was now terminal and he had 12 months to live .
From when Daniel was diagnosed he wasn’t able to do his ‘bucket list ‘ he was too unwell and in pain. He had numerous hospital admissions due to infections.
The past year has been a rollercoaster of emotions for us all. Daniel was 39 years age when he lost his battle with this awful disease .
Daniel leaves behind my sister and his 2 young children . My Sister looked after Daniel giving him his medication, visiting him in hospital and supporting him throughout emotionally and physically whilst putting on a brave face for their children and trying to shield them from the inevitable .
The decision was made for Daniel to go into a hospice So that he could spend the last few weeks in a nice environment and be pain free . This was an extremely hard decision for my sister to make but it was for the best. My sister chose St Luke’s Hospice.
Daniel was only in St Luke’s Hospice for 2 days before he passed away. For the short time he was there The hospice supported my sister and the children and provided Daniel with a nice environment and ensured he was comfortable. For that I will be forever grateful.
