Story
My wife fought hormone triple negative breast cancer for two years.
She changed her diet, she waited patiently for life changing scan results and she had all of the operations recommended by her doctors. She allowed them to pump her body full of the most toxic poison available but still got out of bed every morning and faced the world with a determination and spirit that will inspire me forever. She loved her life and didn't want to leave her children and family.
My wife was a beautiful woman who turned heads every time she walked into a room. She made me laugh every day that I knew her. Throughout her treatment she laughed with, supported and loved those close to her.
Weeks before she died it became more difficult to smile through her illness and it became difficult to support her through her illness. After she was given days to live, Em decided that for her and her family Kirkwood Hospice was the right place to be.
This may sound weird but it was an amazing time. A peaceful time; even spiritual time. My family will be eternally grateful for the role that Kirkwood played in the last two weeks of Em's life. It was fitting of a person who had lived her life with such pride, love and integrity.
My wife's cancer was extremely aggressive. Whilst I will always believe that her actions and spirit bought her valuable time, it was inevitable that her fight against cancer would result in the loss of her beautiful body, smile and hugs.
It was even more inevitable that cancer could never win the fight for Em's soul. She has inspired so many people. She has left enough memories to last us a lifetime. Her integrity, humour and love will stay with me for ever.
Although cancer was never going to win that battle, Kirkwood helped Em maintain the things that were important to her in the final stages of her fight.
She was never a victim. Her family will not be victims but it was good to have Kirkwood in our corner at such a difficult time.
