Story
Migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers don't have safety nets of support...
Migrants Organise are raising money so they can keep up their valuable work during this crisis. They are currently supporting 330 of the most vulnerable refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in London.
COVID-19 is a global problem but is being experienced differently by different groups of people. Many of the people supported by Migrants Organise are homeless, destitute or live in overcrowded accommodation where it is almost impossible to socially distance from others. Most are already struggling with isolation and ongoing mental health issues such as depression, PTSD and anxiety which are at risk of becoming worsened due to the lock-down.
Our strict immigration laws and 'othering' of migrants means people are terrified of deportation. The government started charging migrants for using the NHS a few years ago, this has had severe and now well documented consequences for many migrants, and has created a more generalised fear and reluctance in migrant communities to seek healthcare when they need it. Treatment for COVID-19 (and all communicable diseases) is free for everybody, however many migrants may not know this. So we have a situation where many people are faced with illness, terrified to seek medical help because of their insecure and precarious immigration status. With no access to healthcare and no friends or family to look after them people are left alone. Single mothers, often survivors of trafficking and violence, are struggling to cope in very poor housing conditions, cut off from their support networks.
If we can achieve the goal of £1,000, enough money will be raised to provide 30 Mother and Child Educational Play packs including early years toys, games, books as well as tailored wellbeing online/telephone support.
So please donate as much as you can to this cause, it means a lot to me!
