We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

Our friend and colleague Janet was diagnosed with a brain tumour in April 2010 at the age of 50. Despite surgery, radiotherapy and chemo treatment Janet passed away on the 13 December 2010.

Janet's friends are committed to raising as much money as they can for Brain Tumour Research and throughout the year will be taking part in various charity events  - so watch this page to see what’s coming up!

Hi, and thanks to everyone who has donated so far. It costs £2,740 to sponsor a day of research into brain tumours so we have all agreed to increase our target. Below is an update on some charity events Janet's friends are taking part in to raise money for BTR. A group of us will be taking part in the Great North 10K on Sunday 17th July in Gateshead. Some of the team are also organising a cup cake sale with the proceeds going to BTR and of course we will all be taking part in the Brain Tumour research - Wear a Hat day on the 25th March. We will post some of the embarrassing hat wearing photos on this site so watch this space!! Oh and John K is training hard for his 10k run in April (see his update below) so if you haven’t already donated there's still time...Our Cup cake sale raised an amazing £121, thanks to those who took the time to bake and a big thanks to everyone who bought a cake.... Wear a Hat day was fabulous with an array of fantastic hat's on show. We raised £464 from the day, a big thank you to everyone who got involved.... Read on for a few words from Elliott on the sponsored walk that he an Amanda will be doing on the 9th July from our office to Haydon Bridge.... Following Elliotts & Amanda's walk on the 9th July they raised a fantastic £500.50 a huge thank you to the both of them..... Well done to John King who raised an amazing £261.33 following the various charity events he has taken part in this year..... Following two great cake sales in memory of Janet, her friends and colleagues at NE have raised £359. This has taken us way beyond our target! A big thank you to everyone who has donated to our page since it was first set up, it really means a lot...

On the 14th December, Emma Faid a Friend and work colleague of Janet's organised a Charity Raffle in memeory of Janet. This raised an amazing £252. Thanks to all who bought tickets and especially those who donated gifts.

A few words from Elliott...

It’s fair to say that neither of us have done as much training as we would have liked and so we set out on a 14 mile warm up on Saturday with some concerns.   We saw plenty of drizzle and we finished in reasonable shape after about 5.5 hours.  We were helped out by a pub stop for a lemonade and mars bars and humbugs en route. It taught us a few things about our kit and gave us an idea of each other’s walking pace and as a worky bonus we saw a fair few field margins, tree guards, access enhancements and farmland bird targets as we went along.

The route has moved slightly North which has reduced the distance to 25 - 26 miles.  This  has pretty much eliminated the chances of us a) getting lost and b) not being able to join up the route where footpaths don’t run even remotely in the right direction/at all.

We will still be leaving from the office on the 9th, but our destination has changed slightly in that we will now be walking to the Garrick residence (as you’ll know Janet’s husband is arranging a gathering there that night).

We haven’t any major time targets, just a hope to finish in one piece.  This doesn’t make for straightforward plans to meet anybody passing on the day but we are thinking about  refreshment stops at the Robin Hood pub near Harlow Hill in the morning (perhaps before it opens) and the tea shop in Chollerford mid afternoon.

E & A.

Words from John K..... I thought this is truly sad news, and in sight of this my thoughts naturally drifted to what I could do in memorial of this understated women.  In the short time I have known Janet I believe I can say she has truly lived life and seen some wonderful sites along the way. I believe she held those close to her in high regard and saw time again her give without thought for herself.

I, like many others, am not a great man and in looking at my talents thought the best thing I could use was my legs.  This leads me to the point of all this reading.

Partly in memorial and in an effort to contribute I will run The North Tyneside 10k Road Race in aid of Brain Tumour Research.

The North Tyneside 10K Road Race is a contender for one of the UK’s most scenic road races, which sees elite athletes and field runners alike tackling the tough coastal course.

The race, which takes place on Easter Sunday (24 April 2011), begins at The Parks Sports Centre in North Shields at 10am, taking in the Fish Quay, and some stunning locations including Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and a long stretch of coastline before finishing at St Mary’s Lighthouse.

This is in part a memorial race and a personal commitment to the memory of Janet.  As such I would ask that any donation, no matter how small, be contributed.  After all as my wise grandmother used to say “keep an eye on the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves”.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.    All money raised will go to Brain Tumour Research. Thank you for your donations.

  ..............................................

Brain Tumour Research is woefully underfunded. Brain tumours kill more children and people under 40 years of age than leukaemia or any other cancer, but gets limited funding. Only 12% of males and 15% of females survive beyond 5 years (compared to 50% for all cancers).

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

With thanks to all for your support. Special mention for John K who has provided kit advice and has agreed to drop us some supplies on the day.
