England 1966 World Cup Captain, Bobby Moore, is a West Ham Legend. He played more than 500 games for West Ham but later in life, sadly died of Bowel Cancer in 1993 aged just 51. Since this time, more than 300,000 people will have also lost their lives to bowel cancer.
In 1998, aged just 7, I was almost one of them. A week before Christmas, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. I spent six months in Great Ormond Street Hospital undergoing strong chemotherapy. My chances of survival at the time were put at 10%, but obviously I managed to prove the doctors wrong and make it through to be the person I am today.
The treatment that got me through and many others since, as well as the research, would have been funded by donations. As such, I like to take many an opportunity to highlight cancer research and treatments, but also raise awareness as to the signs to look out for. Today, if a bowel cancer is detected early enough, the chance of survival is now as high as 90%. Therefore, tomorrow I will be in the i-Transport London Office sporting a West Ham shirt and invite you all to do so to with any football shirt!
