Story
Sadly I lost my father late last year, shortly after he was diagnosed with a cancerous stomach tumour. For the final 2 months of his life dad was cared for by the staff at the Northern General Hospital's Palliative Care Unit (PCU).
In what was undoubtedly the most challenging and stressful time of his life, the PCU became his safe space. Nothing was too much trouble, and the care, treatment, professionalism and empathy he received there helped to relieve not only his physical pain, but also many of his anxieties too.
In honour my dad's passing my 2 brothers and I have signed up to do the 3 Peaks Challenge climbing the three highest peaks in the Peak District on an epic Pennine Way challenge.
The challenge will take place on 19th August and we've already started training for the big day - which will see us cover 42 kilometres (26 miles) climbing a cumulative total of over 1,800 metres. The trek is usually completed over 2 days but we will complete it in just 1 day (12 hours)!
Our motivation to complete the challenge is obviously first and foremost to honour our late father's memory. But raising funds for the Palliative Care Unit when the NHS seems to be buckling under the financial pressures we're facing today is also something we feel somewhat compelled to do.
