Story

As many of my friends will know, I've had long hair since I was 13. My hair has been a big part of my identity growing up, but I'm nearly 27 now and I fancy a change. So, alas, it's time to say goodbye to the mop! I'd like to use the opportunity to raise funds for charity.

I've chosen this particular charity because I recently had a "cancer scare" myself. I'd gone to the GP with a suspected toenail infection, but she was more concerned about a black line on my toenail which I thought was a bruise. She suspected it could be subungual melanoma; a rare and aggressive type of skin cancer. Thanks to the incredible NHS, I was given a 2-week emergency referral to a consultant dermatologist at Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital. But that 2 weeks felt like 2 years. I can't begin to describe the anxiety and panic. Thankfully, I've been given the all-clear, but others aren't so fortunate.

The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity (SKCIN) is a small organisation which raises awareness of skin cancer through education, promoting prevention and early detection. This is particularly important for little-known cancers like subungual melanoma.

Please consider donating as much or as little as you can. Every penny counts. Plus, if you select the 'Gift Aid' option, HMRC will add another 25% on top.

I will also be donating the hair to charity if I can find one that accepts hair which has been dyed and straightened over the years.

Haircut appointment is on 28 August.

Finally, if you ever notice any dark lines on your nails, don't just put it down to a bruise. Get it checked out!
