We fund research and support services to help all those affected by ataxia

Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

My name is Alicia and I am 20 years old (2024) I was diagnosed with Ataxia at the age of 2. Since then my family have been raising money to help somehow one day find a cure for Ataxia.

Living with Ataxia has been frustrating at times, especially going through school with children that didn’t understand Ataxia and didn’t show a lot of support, however; this has never held me back. I love to meet new people, I enjoy getting out and about and I love to go sight seeing with my partner Bradley. I don’t give up easily and I have a whole lot of support from my family and friends.

We have previously held fundraising events Including BBQ’s and cake afternoons at my grandparents home, where a bouncy castle has kept the children playing happily while parents are enjoying a coffee and cake.

We also raise money by holding summer fetes at local halls and churches. At these we have a BBQ, bouncy castle, tombola, raffle, face painting, cake and many more stalls. These items are donated by family, friends, local small businesses and local ordinary people that continue to support us.

Ongoing we have a collection tin at the Maxwells bar and grill in Loughborough where customers kindly give small change constantly.

All the above events are being hold on a yearly basis - with hopefully more ideas along the way.

We have recently been a little quiet with not getting to do much during the coronavirus and the social distancing issues we’ve all experiencing, but we will continue to try our best to keep up the fundraising in the coming months and years ahead.

How Alicia’s family see her………

Alicia has the most beautiful personality you’d ever wish to meet. Alicia is a very kind and loving person that is always thinking about others and family get togethers! She will see everyone individually and arrange them all to come together and absolutely loves the family community. Alicia was diagnosed with Ataxia at the age of 2 and is now 20 (2024) Alicia is loved so much by all her family that she is known as our “precious", by all of us, as a family; we are praying for her and trying our hardest to raise as much money as we possibly can so that some how in the future we can find a cure for Ataxia.

Alicia has a personality that is so addictive, she is a constant tonic to be around. She gives her all to everything she does and does absolutely nothing by half. Alicia shows her love for those around her and continues to embrace their love for her. Alicia is such a loyal family member and everyone loves her individually.

'Ataxia' means ‘absence of order’. People with ataxia have problems of co-ordination. This is because parts of the nervous system that normally control co-ordination and balance are affected.

Ataxia UK aims to support all people affected by ataxia; people with the condition, their families, carers and friends. The charity funds research into developing safe, effective treatments with the ultimate goal of finding a cure for the ataxias. In the meantime Ataxia UK helps people to live with ataxia by providing a range of services that are not available anywhere else, including an advocacy service..
