Kate was a 31year old Marine Biologist from an ordinary family in Norfolk, UK.  Sadly Kate was diagnosed with a brain stem tumour in June 2019, treatments were unsuccessful and she died just a year later on June 7th 2020.   

Kate was fortunate that Blue Marine Foundation sponsored her research PhD, studying Yellowfin Tuna.  BLUE are now sponsoring Dr Sam Webber to complete Kate’s very important research and publish a paper on the results.

Blue Marine Foundation are setting up an education scholarship in memory of Kate called the ‘Kate Downes Scholarship’.  This will enable them to continue Kate’s legacy by educating and informing students of the importance of continuing her passion, her love of all Marine life and her vision to cleaner, healthier and sustainable seas.  

Every £1 will help us achieve this and to keep our promise to Kate for the only one thing she asked, to not be forgotten.......
