At 8am on 1st August 2020, I kayaked over 500 miles around the southern half of Scotland in a fortnight in a kayak.
The journey will start and finish in the fishing village of Pittenweem in Fife and pass Edinburgh in the Firth of Forth, on the Forth & Clyde canal past Glasgow into the Clyde and then past Arran, Jura, Mull, Fort William and into the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness before returning to the North Sea at Inverness passing Aberdeen, Dundee and St Andrews.

I intend to raise money for The Fishermen’s Mission in honour of the fishing community in Fife and in particular, my girlfriend’s father who retired from 50 years of fishing at Pittenweem near where he still lives.
We may be met in Pittenweem by some local press, sponsors and even MSP Willie Rennie and MP Wendy Chamberlain, as well as by others during the second week in Collieston harbour, Inverbervie and Arbroath.
Whilst fishing is a great and noble trade, culture and way of life it can also be difficult and dangerous for fishermen and their families. This year has also been particularly difficult for fishermen financially as Covid 19 has reduced the value of their catch to such an extent that it is currently not economical to leave the harbour in their boats. The Fishermen’s Mission aims to help by providing financial assistance, support and life-saving during storms. So far, The
Coop, Fisherman’s Friend, G&J Wilson (Fishmongers of St Monans), Jellyexpress (online toy retailer), Akbaslar (clothing producer), Repair Care (wood resin manufacturer), Blakemore (Spar) and Farmfoods have offered some charitable sponsorship.
Last weekend, I lapped the Isle of Wight (68 miles) in 1 day returning at 3am).
I have also featured on the radio (4.5m listeners) including:
BBC Radio Scotland
Bauer Radio Scotland Portfolio
BBC Radio Solent, Heart FM South Coast (6-9am bulletins), Wave 105, Express FM week long interview series, Spirit FM 4-6pm bulletins, Isle of Wight Radio, Mid Downs Radio, Fire Radio, Hope FM, Awaaz FM drive time and cafe Awaaz shows and on the websites of More Radio and The Breeze South’s events page and in a few newspapers in London and Scotland (The Courier, Dundee Evening Telegraph,
The Arran Banner and Ham & High). Other newspapers are due to publish articles including more extensive weekend sections.
