Story
Throughout 2020 we have been raising money for our four chosen charities, which are:
- Durrell Jersey
- Jersey Alzheimer’s Association
- Jersey Hospice Care
- Macmillan Jersey
We recognise that this is a particularly tough time for the island’s charity sector and, as an organisation, we want to do all we can to support these local causes and others.
Why Jersey Alzheimer’s Association (JAA)?
JAA exists to provide advice, support and information to the community as a whole in relation to Alzheimer’s.
Since 2012 they have seen an increase of over 235% in the amount of people seeking their support and accessing their activities. This includes people of all ages, their families, friends and carers.
The JAA offer counselling and family support service, as well as a number of community activities and a weekend Saturday day care centre.
The JAA also provide education and awareness sessions to schools, community groups, local companies and organisations.
What is dementia?
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. Whilst most people with dementia are older, most older people do not get dementia. Dementia is more common after the age of 65 years, however, people in their 40s and 50s can also have dementia and it can occur in people even younger than this (although this is rare).
At present there is no cure for dementia but there are ways of reducing the risks and different medications have been found to reduce some symptoms. Support is vital for people with dementia and the help of families, friends and carers can make a positive difference to managing the condition.
How you can help
We are going to be hosting different activities throughout the rest of 2020 where we will be asking staff to donate what they can to the JAA.
