Story
This page is in memory of our beloved mum, sister, aunt, friend, and colleague, Jan Wallcraft.
Jan dedicated herself to making the world a better place, working for Shelter, Mind, the Sainsbury's Centre, the Mental Health Foundation, and many other charitable and public sector organisations. She marched in support of miners and teachers, and against the Tory government and Brexit. She spent a week in Holloway Prison for the Can't Pay, Won't Pay campaign, which was working towards low-cost public transport for low-income families in London. From the 80s onwards, she was instrumental in launching the mental health service user involvement movement, and spent most of the rest of her life tirelessly (or sometimes very tiredly!) fighting for this cause, completing a Ph.D. in user involvement in mental health research in order to be taken seriously by those in authority. Even after she retired, she still wanted to help, and campaigned for the Labour Party on behalf of Jeremy Corbyn, as well as volunteering as a massage therapist for refugees in her local area.
Jan sadly passed away on 20th March 2020, age 71, following a stroke. Her good influence will continue to be felt, even unknowingly, by thousands of people. She will be missed.

"Thank you so much for choosing to support Leeds Mind in memory of mum, Jan.
Please accept my sincere condolences for your and your families loss, this really is such a lovely thing for you to do and we really do appreciate your support, especially at this time. Reading your Just Giving page Jan sounds like an incredible lady who contributed so much to as you have said “making the world a better place” which I’m sure she did.
All our teams are now working from home but we have quickly become accustomed to the various platforms available (steep learning curve) and are continuing to run services such as Counselling, peer support groups, creative arts centre “Inkwell” as well as some other of our services online.
