Story
Background
This year marks 10 years since the passing of a dear husband, father & friend to all, Mr Dhiru Chavda. To many people in the Gujarati Community in Bradford, and more widely across the UK, he was best known for his selfless work in organising charitable fundraising events, ranging from cricket matches through to dinner & dance shows.
Our fundraising event
With this in mind, and in his memory, his wife (Mrs Ella Chavda) & Children (Suneet Chavda & Bina Chauhan) together with their immediate family have formed a planning committee with some of his closest friends in a bid to raise money for charity. Together they have planned a commemorative dinner & dance show event to take place on Saturday 24th September 2022 in Bradford. Alongside directly fundraising as part of the event, we are also fundraising online to further raise the profile of the two worthy causes we're supporting, and that is why we have set up this page.
The chosen charities
All online and offline proceeds from the event and through this page will be donated and split between our two chosen charities, the Mango Tree (Goa, India) & The Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal (with all the money from this online donation page specifically going to the Mange Tree).
Mango Tree
Mango Tree (registered charity: 1148049) was chosen due to Dhiru’s passion for education. He showed this in abundance through his career whilst supporting hundreds of students at the University of Bradford. This small charity runs a school, which Suneet has personally visited, and the charity has the core belief that children have a right to a healthy education, to be safe from abuse, to attend school, to be treated with respect and to be heard. Their support is targeted at children from severely disadvantaged villages. They provide them with education, transport, playtime and very importantly a substantial meal for the day, which unfortunately they may not get at home. The charity’s services are provided completely free of charge to the children and their families which is only possible with the help of donations.
A donation of £20 can provide:
- A daily meal for a child for around 3 months
- A school uniform, bag, notebooks and stationary that a child requires for the year
- 3 raincoats, which make it possible for child to attend school in the monsoon season
- 6 pairs of shoes per child
- Tuition classes for the elder children for around 4 months
- Fuel to run the van that transports the children to and from school for a week
The Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal
The second chosen charity is the Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal. The donation will be made via the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), Bradford - this donation will be made offline. We have chosen to support this cause as Dhiru has hosted many events at the Ukrainian Community Centre in Bradford over the years and they have supported him and the wider Gujarati community wholeheartedly. This along with the current heart-breaking situation in Ukraine at the moment meant that we wanted to give back to this wonderful community and support them in this distressing time of need.
A donation of £23 can provide:
- A food and hygiene pack for 1 adult for a month
- 30 thermal foil blankets for emergency use
