We on B Shift White Oils at the Humber refinery decided not too long ago that we needed to do something to "Give Back" to organisations that have been a great help to members of our Shift.

 

My son Tom has Type 1 diabetes, he has had diabetes since he was 18 months old, now a 15 (and a half) year old teenager his life so far has not always been that easy. Constant testing of his blood sugar levels along with 4 insulin injections a day dont always sit well with a young active lad. Recently Tom swapped his insulin injections for an insulin pump, what a difference that has made. Tom never let diabetes get in his way before but now he has even more freedom to do what he wants when he wants. So much freedom that Tom will also be completing the coast 2 Coast with us.

·         There are 2.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK.

·         There are an estimated 500,000 people in the UK who have diabetes but DO NOT know it.

·         Every three minutes someone, somewhere in the UK will learn they have diabetes.

Diabetes UK is the charity for people with diabetes, their family, friends and carers. Their mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and to work towards a future without diabetes.

 

Mandy Weller, Ken's wife, has an incurable grade 3 Brain tumour and is currently undergoing Chemotherapy at Castle Hill near Hull. I am sure you would agree that both are very worthy causes that is why I have taken on the challenge of doing the Coast to Coast with the lads from the 7th September 2009, 150 miles of some of the most beautiful parts of the country you could visit on a Bike!
