Story

Humanitarian Aid in the Holy Land.

The conflict in the Holy Land and the problems caused by the ‘security wall’ are well known, but the conditions under which the Palestinians carry on their daily life can only be guessed at. Eagle Aid’s part in this misery is to try to help where we can to relieve the suffering and hardship caused by the conflict. To this end, we support five initiatives:

•          The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem administers an humanitarian aid fund, which helps with the cost of emergency operations – often in Israeli hospitals – needed by its parishioners. We try to make a contribution to this fund on an annual basis. Our last one was £11,500 in June 2009 to help bring relief to the suffering people in Gaza.

•          The Friends of Bethlehem University set up ‘Olive Aid’ to support Palestinian farmers in Bethlehem who have been cut off by the Wall from their own land and therefore from their livelihood. Half of their income buys sapling Olive Trees which are planted in secure areas outside the exclusion zone and which will begin to yield an income for the farmers in three years time. To date, Eagle Aid have provided 136 young olive trees, costing £12.50 each or £1,700 in total.

•          The other half of Olive Aid’s income provides bursaries for Bethlehem University’s undergraduates from Gaza, who have been cut off from their homes and families. So far, Eagle Aid has contributed £1,700 to these bursaries.

•          Recently, the ‘Friends of the Holy Land’ have set up a ‘Widow’s Mite’ fund to provide humanitarian relief for those in the Christian Community who, for reasons of disability, advancing years, lack of employment etc, cannot provide for themselves. Eagle Aid has contributed £450 to this Fund during 2010.

• The Daughters of Charity and the St Vincent de Paul Society in Bethlehem look after, in the Holy Family Children’s Home, vulnerable children below the age of 6, who live in danger or are victims of violence. The Sisters also provide shelter for women who become pregnant outside wedlock and who are in risk of being killed to ‘save’ the family honour.  Eagle Aid has also contributed £450 to this Fund during 2010.
