Story

I am running my first ever marathon in London next month for Children with Cancer and my aim is to raise £2,000 for this wonderful charity. For 30 years Children with Cancer has raised over £220 million to help fight against childhood cancer by funding vital research to save the lives of children with cancer and keep families together for longer.

Every week in the UK, more than 70 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer. Every year Children with Cancer invest more than £4 million in new research across the full range of childhood cancers. They currently have more than 60 projects under way at leading centres around the UK. This includes research that aims to drive up survival rates in even the hardest-to-treat cancers and to reduce the burden of toxicity for young cancer patients.

I am choosing to run for Children with Cancer because I am both deeply moved and inspired by the patient stories and am struck by how indiscriminate childhood cancer is and how helpless I would feel as a parent. Running the marathon is an opportunity for me both to honour these children’s extraordinary bravery and to support the vital research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancer made possible by the charity.

As a teenager I was a keen and successful athlete competing at county level for Surrey, but that was a long time ago and I’ve not run a marathon before, or anywhere near! Training stepped up a gear in the new year with lots of early morning (and very cold!) runs to work and then longer runs at weekends. While the training is tough I am so lucky to have friends to run and motivate me as well as my Dad (he’s incredibly motivating, having completed an ‘Iron Man’ himself!) to keep me on track.

I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to raise money for the work of the charity but I can’t do it without your help. Your kind and generous donation will not only support this fantastic charity and their life-saving work but it will also help to motivate me every step of the way. I don't think I realised just how tough training to run a marathon would be or how much it would take over my life!

I will leave you with a quote from Stephen Sutton MBE, an inspirational charity activist who sadly lost his battle with cancer at aged 19...'life isn't measured in time, it's measured in achievements' This certainly will be a huge personal achievement for me and I really do appreciate your support in getting me there!
