Story
In 2005 age 58 my Mum, Helen was diagnosed with early onset Dementia, she sadly passed away in 2010 at just 64. We also lost her Sister, Jean her Brother, Peter and my Grandad, Ronald at a similar age to this terrible disease...
All types of Dementia are a disease of the brain and can effect anybody, even at a younger age. Over time it can take away someone's memory, personality and ability to function. There are many different types of Dementia, the most well known being Alzheimer's.
I've been an Alzheimer’s Society ambassador for the past 15 yrs and hope to raise as much awareness as I can. I've fundraised by doing challenges such as the London Marathon 2010, the London-Paris bike ride, trekked the Great wall of China and even appeared on Celebrity Mastermind!
The Alzheimer's Society gives valuable support to over 850,000 people in this country living with Dementia and their carers and families. They also fund vital research into finding medication that may prolong someone's life and although a long way off, possibly a cure. We survived our journey through it but others are still in desperate need of support.
There is still a huge stigma attached to this disease, many people shy away and don't know how to handle it. It is summed up perfectly in this quote. "It does no good to ask why. Just be there. Show up and listen, even to the silences. Beneath the surface of the disease is a soul that can't have Dementia, a soul that still wants to be heard."
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
Thanks for your support!
