Bridge to Bridge, Oxford to Venice bike ride · 19 July 2014 to 29 July 2014 ·

First founded in the 13th century, Hertford has a tradition of progressive and forward-thinking initiatives. The first Oxford college to champion outreach and access and part of the first cohort to admit women, Hertford remains a thriving academic community for over 600 undergraduates and graduates.

Story

On the 26th of July, I'll be joining a fleet of other Hertford students, friends, parents and alumnus who are cycling 1000 km from Oxford to Venice. I'l be joining the peloton for the last 354 km, cycling from Lake Garda into Venice over 3 days.

The bike ride is a fundraising event in order to raise money for student support at Hertford. I'm lucky enough to be at a college that already prides itself in providing excellent student support, with 1 in 3 students offered a bursary each year. This bike ride is an attempt to endow the bursary fund in perpetuity, to make sure Hertford can keep offering this calibre of student support for the years to come.

Isaac Newton said: 'We build too many walls and not enough bridges'.

Oxford is a university of academic excellence, nothing more. For me, this bike ride is not just about offering bursaries to Hertford students in need. It's about breaking down the walls associated with Oxford, and proving that whatever your background, Oxford is a place that allows you to think, challenge, and express yourself. In riding the Bridge 2 Bridge bike ride, I hope to raise money to allow those who are academically excellent, but don't have the means, to study and excel at Oxford. And let it open up to others all the doors that it has opened up to me.
