Story
Scottish charity Global Support Link works with local organisations in developing countries to provide equal opportunities for all. I became aware of their vital work after our Rotary Club helped to feed families and children in Nepal during the pandemic.
The charity is currently helping a community in Nepal - REAL Nepal - to sustain their residential school for Nepali blind children. I'm trying to raise £750 - one month's running costs - to support the school's vital work. Funds will buy braille equipment, food, accommodation, clothing and salaries for the teacher and care-giver. Children will benefit from a month's schooling and daily living needs, with the chance to learn living and social skills and build their confidence together.
Life has almost no meaning for most blind children in Nepal. Inaccessible landscapes, poverty, discrimination and lack of opportunity create very real challenges. Many blind children don't go to school and or have high dropout rates, even at primary level. Some, have never left their own home. After an earthquake in 2015, there were 587 blind children in the area, including those blinded by the natural disaster.
Since 2017, Rajendra - himself visually impaired - has been running a residential schooling facility for blind children. The centre provides mobility and orientation skills, Braille literacy, health and sanitisation, arts and sports, communication and computer skills. It aims to empower talented young people with visual impairments, who can go on to lead independent lives and have professional careers.
But running costs are a constant pressure and the school urgently needs funds to take it through the coming months. A donation of £25 would fund a teacher for a whole week while £12 would feed everyone for a day. £5 would buy a white cane for a child; an essential support for their independence.
We'd be very grateful for any support you could give.
