Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, it is very much appreciated.
I am a student counsellor at The WIsh Centre and can see for myself the amazing work delivered by this organisation. This centre is truly a lifeline for many people who just don't know where else to go.
The work is with women, who have, in many cases, suffered years of abuse. The women I have worked with on placement, have at times, suffered abuse their whole lives, from a parent and maybe siblings, then later on a partner/husband. I used to wonder why women like this didn't just leave. I now understand that sometimes their life is in most danger once they have left.
The work is also with perpetrators, who are supported to recognise the impact of their behaviour and supported to change
There is work with children to help them if they have been witnessed or experienced domestic abuse or help children to learn about protective behaviours.
Many of you will know that I am very new to this outdoor stuff. I hate the cold and I have never liked swimming. But since lockdown I have found that open water swimming really does help my mental health.
The Polar Bear Challenge https://polarbearchallenges.com/,
I have signed up to do the Silver Penguin, this means that I will have to swim 250 meters twice a month between the 1st of November 2021 and the 31st of March 2022.
I have no idea how difficult the extreme temperature will affect me. At the moment to train for this I swim twice a week in the rivers and reservoirs near my home. I have wonderful pals that accompany me as they complete their own challenge. I have prepared as much as I can for this event and I am determined to complete this challenge to make a difference.
Any donation is an help it does not matter how small. Any words of encouragement will also go a long way.
Thank you
