Story

Largely due to COVID-19 and the many lockdowns we went through it is much later than I originally planned, but today I did Brave the Shave!  Video and/or picture will be further down the page - struggling to get them uploaded for some reason!

Thank you to those of you who already helped me by donating when I first set this page up, but please share as I would love the amount to increase....
=======================
On March 19th 2020, just before lock down, I started radiotherapy for breast cancer.  That weekend Facebook was totally flooded with reports to do with the COVID-19 Pandemic. By the time I was at the hospital again on the Monday I was a nervous wreck and afraid of contracting this awful virus that had taken so many lives already.

I asked if I could delay my treatments until after the virus had gone but was told that as I had already started my treatments I should carry on.  The radiotherapist was very good though and suggested I had that day’s treatment as I was already there, and he would ask a doctor to call me later to discuss my concerns.

That call did not have to happen as one of their doctors chanced to come into the treatment room as I was getting ready.

Sadly, with all that was going on and my mental health at that time, I
did not get her name.  However, I do strongly remember the peacefulness that came over me as she talked with me and as I felt so much calmer I agreed to carry on with the treatments.

The Mount Vernon Cancer Centre had changed their booking in process the first day I attended.  Patients who were driving themselves in were asked to call from our mobile phones to book in.  We then waited in our cars for the staff to call us so we could go in with as little time as possible in the small waiting room.

As I had been in such a panic on the Monday (the evening of which became the start of lock down), the staff were all very good with me.  They left it as long as possible before calling me in, often asking me to go straight through to the treatment room prior to changing.

I am very grateful for this, and their general kindness, compassion and care as they gave the treatments.  I am not good about seeing lots of different medical people so, although there were some staff that I only met once, maybe twice, mostly I saw the same few people on a regular basis.  This made the whole experience a much more pleasant one to have under very difficult circumstances.

It is my sincere wish that this Cancer Centre continues the good work they are already doing so I am hoping to raise £1,000 (I would really like to raise £10,000!) to say thank you…..I’m intending to have my head shaved for the New Year - the money has got to be worth it though!  Please support this great Cancer Centre by sponsoring me!
