Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am a 17 year old girl from Scotland. I am currently on a three month placement in The Gambia (a small country in West Africa) working at Bakau Newtown Lower Basic School which was arranged by Affecting Real Change. The school I am placed in has 2400 pupils and is free for anyone in the area to attend. These kids are between 7-16. The school currently has 2 brand new toilets which were donated by Unicef and ARC but the pipe that supplies the school is too small to supply anything more than 2 taps which all the children use for drinking. Even the water supply to these taps isn't enough and we can go whole days without any water for the kids to use for drinking. Without working toilets children often go to a loo behind buildings and they play not far from it. This is extremely worrying for the health of these young children. The girls are also discouraged to come to school once they hit puberty due to the absence of a toilet. I feel like this is urgent to allow the children to learn and be healthy.
The school wishes to drill a borehole which will allow the school to have a realible source of water for the toilets and additional taps. The borehole will also not come with further bills which is ideal for the school as they could not afford to keep with water bills. Every little helps - sorry tesco. But seriously, even a small donation would mean the world to me and these kids. This urgent. We need to get these children the dignity of a toilet and protect their health.
Remember to use giftaid as well. Won't cost you anything more!
