Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Gregory Steven Roscow

This JustGiving page has been set up for Great Bear and Nightingale employees to raise money in memory of Greg for a charity close to his heart. Aside from his career success, Greg was a proficient sportsman. He represented Cricklade first team for both cricket and rugby and was passionate about sport.

The School of Hard Knocks

Drawing on his early career as a PE teacher, the School of Hard Knocks CEO, Ken, worked in one of Liverpool's most challenging schools. He devised a course that used the sport of rugby to engage young men who were long-term unemployed and teach them positive values and behaviours. He hoped it would give them a sense of self worth, self efficacy and hopefulness for the future through sport. The result was the School of Hard Knocks.

Working now in London, Cardiff, Glasgow and Edinburgh, the charity currently employs a core team of 18 people. It helps over 750 children and adults a year! Ultimately, though, it still adheres to the ethos and methodology of the first course in 2007 - empowering people to achieve whatever they set their minds to.

What has the charity achieved in schools?

  • 94% of our at-risk pupils avoid permanent exclusion
  • 62% fall in behavioural referrals across all schools
  • 66% increase in punctuality
  • 50% improvement in attendance
  • 100% of students sat at least 5 GCSEs
  • 44% achieved A*-C in English or Mathematics
