We are very lucky to have everything we need to begin our next chapter together. In lieu of wedding gifts, please consider donating to The Rose Road Association in honour of Shelly's brother Luke instead.
Our elder brother Luke Masters was born on 18th June 1979. He was born at 26 weeks and weighed 2lbs. At that time very few babies survived arriving so early and it was hit and miss with medical care due to them having no knowledge of how to treat babies that small.
He was given the last rites on his first night as he was not expected to survive.
Over the course of the next few weeks due to a combination of too much and/or too little oxygen and medication he was left severely disabled. This is not a condemnation of the medical care he received as they did their very best for him.
He was left with cerebral palsy which meant he could not control his limbs and was blind with no way of vocalising.
At the age of 5, it was recommended that he attend The Rose Road School.
This was a game-changer for Luke and our family. He attended daily and whilst there he received physio every day along with sessions in aromatherapy and hydrotherapy as well as being around other children. He was also able to stay overnight on an occasional basis which provided respite for our Mum.
Places like Rose Road and the people who work in them, give a lot of support to children like Luke and their families.
