Last 10th of April our family lost my father in law Christian Deschamps at 67 years of age. We are a small family and his loss came to great sadness to us all.

I knew Christian for the best part of 20 years. I can fairly say I was lucky not just to marry his daughter but have learned a few things from him on the way.

Above all, he was a patient beyond zen control man and always put 100% on whatever he did. He had endless amount of friends and was thoroughly loved in his local community. Christian was always willing to help others and make use of his endless handyman skills. As a good French man he loved good food and wine.

Christian suffered Parkinson's disease for many years. He was a good family man, the old school type, a man of not too many words. He was more of the quiet type. Christian was just a good man all around.

Parkinson's is a devastating disease like many other long term illness. It makes you slowly loose control of your body, leaving a shadow of the person you once were. The psychological effect on the lost of your body control can slowly disintegrate the best of people.

The treatment consist on a countless amount of daily medications routine. The medication comes with a long list of side effects which becomes part of your life in addition to the disease itself.

Christian was ox strong, he faced Parkinson's face on and with great dignity facing the circumstances. I have come to value better what dignity is, something we mostly take for granted.

In Christian's memory, a year after he is gone decided to get myself on a bike from London to Paris and do my bit for the cause supporting Parkinson's UK charity. They do a great job funding Research and people affected by Parkinson.

Christian loved his visits to the UK and would have loved the "British roast beef" and "French frog" bike ride irony :-)

I have not ridden a bike for twenty years so it comes with lots of sweat, aches, laughs and maybe a few tears from the cold weather of course ;-)

It is a three days 330 km bike ride from London Tower Bridge to Paris Eiffel Tower. I will be leaving London on 2nd May 2015 and arriving to Paris on 4th May 2015. I will have no road support and it is a self sponsored. It is all for charity. Whatever small your contribution and support, it will be appreciated - is for a good cause.

I will have two great companions for the journey, Russell Shaw and Chris Wares. I can only but thank them for their priceless support.

Le 10 avril dernier j'ai perdu mon beau père Christian Deschamps alors âgé de 67 ans. Nous sommes une petite famille et sa perte nous a tous plongé dans une grande tristesse.

j'ai connu Christian pendant près de vingt ans. J'ai été chanceux de me marier à sa fille, mais je le suis d'autant plus d'avoir pu apprendre auprès de lui durant ces années.

Il était avant tout un homme patient, calme et qui se donnait toujours totalement dans ce qu'il entreprenait. Il avait un nombre incalculable d'amis et était aimé de tous dans son entourage. Christian était toujours partant pour aider les autres en utilisant ses dons de bricoleur. En bon français il aimait la bonne cuisine et le bon vin.

Christian était atteint de la maladie de Parkinson depuis de nombreuses années. Il était un homme de famille de la vieille école, bon et de peu de mots. Il était un homme tranquille répandant le bien autour de lui.

La maladie de Parkinson comme beaucoup de maladies de long terme est dévastatrice. Elle vous fait lentement perdre le contrôle de votre corps, ne laissant à la fin que l'ombre de la personne que vous étiez. L'effet psychologique produit est aussi dévastateur que la maladie elle-même et peut miner la plus solide des personne.

Le traitement consiste en une quantité effarante de médicaments pris plusieurs fois par jour. Cette médication engendre des effets secondaires avec lesquels il faut vivre en plus de la maladie.

Christian était un roc, il a fait face à la maladie avec dignité malgré les circonstances. J'ai alors appris à mieux estimer ce qu'est la dignité, chose que la plupart prennent pour acquis.

En mémoire de Christian, un an après qu'il soit parti, j'ai décidé de monter sur un vélo et de rouler de Londres vers Paris pour apporter ma contribution à l'association caritative anglaise de Parkinson. Ils font un travail formidable en finançant la recherche et en aidant les personnes atteintes de la maladie.

Christian aimait venir en Angleterre et aurait aimé ce drôle de ce tour de vélo entre la terre des "rosebeef" et des "cuisses de grenouilles". :-)

Je ne suis pas monté sur un vélo depuis vingt ans, alors ce grand tour se fera au prix de litres de sueur, de douleurs, de fou-rires et probablement de larmes (de froid bien sûr :-))

C'est un périple à vélo de 330km en trois jours qui partira de la Tour de Londres jusqu'à la tour Eiffel. Je partirai de Londres le 5 mai 2015 pour arriver à Paris le 4 mai 2015. Je n'aurai pas d'assistance, et le financement sera sur fonds propres. Ce sera entièrement dédié à la charité. Quel que soit votre contribution ou soutien, ils sera apprécié - c'est pour une bonne cause.

Deux très bons amis, Russell Shaw et Chris Wares, 'accompagneront durant le voyage. Je ne peux que les remercier de leur support inestimable.
