We #TackleTheStigma around mental health to improve mental wellbeing across the UK

Story

In September 2022, I’m running 135 miles (217km) in less than 36 hours, around the coastline of Anglesey, to raise money for the LooseHeadz Foundation. The challenge was supposed to commence in August 2021, but due to injury, local restrictions, and a bad bout of Covid in the Wilson-Hull Household, we've had to reassess. Funds raised on the previous page have been deposited here.

It’s no secret that many people’s mental health has taken an absolute battering over the last 2 years. I know mine has. Sadly, living with poor mental health and all of the stigma attached to speaking up and asking for help, is the norm for so many people.

In 2019, one of my closest friends sadly took his own life. Just 8 months later, another friend did the same. Two seemingly happy, strong, and confident lads simply ceased to exist within the blink of an eye. It’s time to stop stigmatising talking out about our mental health.

Ultra-marathoners often describe a 100 mile race as “life in a day” due to the emotional ups and downs runners experience, as well as the sheer duration of the feat. Add onto that an extra ultramarathon 35 miles, and who knows what I’ll go through to get to the end. All I know is, at the end of the run there’ll be the smiling faces of friends and family food, a couple of beers, and hopefully a dog or two.

The LooseHeadz Foundation is a registered charity (#1193051). The Foundation is the cornerstone of our campaign to #TackleTheStigma.

We guarantee that 100% of the money raised for our Foundation will be used exclusively for the betterment of players’ mental wellbeing.

Currently the Foundation is funded through the sales of clothing, donations and fundraisers.

The Foundation is run by a board of trustees, and headed up by our patron Shaun Edwards, to ensure total visibility in everything we do. Our trustees then decide where to distribute the money raised, and report back to the team on the impact of their campaigns.

We are immensely proud to have Shaun Edwards as the Patron of the LooseHeadz Foundation. Shaun, a legend of both codes of rugby needs no introduction. His help, support and association allow us to further help the silent majority affected by mental health.

The Foundation operates entirely separately to LooseHeadz to ensure that all funds received are appropriately distributed.

More information on the Foundation and its initiatives can be found here - The Foundation.

Any donations (and support runners) are massively appreciated.

See you on the other side, and thank you!

LooseHeadz Foundation have set ourselves the simple, yet ambitious goal of placing a ‘LooseHead’ in each of the 1,800 rugby clubs in the UK (and hopefully one day beyond). This mental health lead can then push our prevent, promote, educate and signpost process within their own club.
