The current flooding is severe, it has killed many, forcing majority to flee their homes and seeking safe shelter in schools and other communal buildings. Some are still trapped with out food and safe water.
The Surma River in Sylhet is flowing 70 centimeters above the danger level, according to the flood warning centre.
The floods have mainly affected Sylhet city and district and neighbouring Sunamganj and Moulvibazar districts. All three districts are located in the Sylhet division, one of the eight divisions of Bangladesh. Sylhet city is Bangladesh’s fourth-largest.
The first round of flooding took place May 10, 2022. The waters began to recede May 22. But a second round of flooding occurred June 16 and has made the situation dire.
The situation is also dire in neighbouring Sunamganj district. Almost all upazilas of the district as well as Sunamganj town are now flooded. Direct road communication has been cut off. More than 100,000 people have been affected by the floods in the district.
