In recognition of the sacrifices that many Hispanics have made during the pandemic, the Financial Times will be fundraising towards Mixteca’s food justice campaign throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.
The pandemic has been an extremely challenging time for members of the Hispanic/Latinx community. Many have suffered job losses and are lagging behind in the economic recovery given their overrepresentation in the service and hospitality sectors. Hispanic/Latinx workers have risked their health to keep essential businesses running and we would like to show our gratitude by giving back to their community.
Mixteca's food distribution program is unique in that it centers on food justice. They collaborate with local farmers, focus on getting fresh produce to community members, protect workers' rights in restaurants, and call attention to the fact that access to healthy food should be considered a fundamental human right.
Over the past year, Mixteca has worked tirelessly to ensure that Latinx and indigenous Latinx immigrant communities have access to healthy and culturally appropriate foods. In February, they opened the first community fridge in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, which has become a vital resource for the community. Your support will help Mixteca continue its work on food access, revitalization of traditional agricultural techniques, cooking classes, and food distribution.
