Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I decided to fundraise for Children of Fire as I volunteered for the charity, when I could not fly home to Portugal during the Covid19 pandemic. I came to know the most-badly-burned girl in the world to survive: Dorah. She is the first friend in my life with a facial disfigurement, who is also missing her hands. I wondered how she survived the fire that hurt her. But as the days passed, it started to become second nature being around her, helping her with her daily routine. I was impressed when I realised that she could use the swing by herself and go upstairs to the study without any assistance. I saw that she could understand what people were talking about and she laughed at our jokes. She is a friendly girl, outgoing, adventurous, funny, who like affection, knows what she wants and likes adrenaline as well. I can even imagine her bungee jumping or skydiving! It is this irrepressible spirit that Children of Fire encourages in burned children, that the world has given up on. I am proud to be able to help with reading with the young children and tutoring the teenagers (Portuguese included), gardening, cooking and administration. I have learned the flowers and trees of Johannesburg alongside the children and hope that you can sponsor my activities to further improve their lives. These children have come from war zones, from exploding paraffin stoves in shacks, from electrical and even hot water burns. They have physical injuries and they are injured emotionally by society. Help me to help them, please.
