Story

Sharon Arroyo lived in Cleveland for over 40 years. After successfully raising four children and supporting their every endeavor, she humbly began to invest in her own future. Already a certified Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Ohio, she returned to Cuyahoga Community College to pursue an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. Her philosophy was to prepare herself for an ever-changing world with a fluctuating job market. In fact, she often joked about taking a career as a full-time student to continuously quench her thirst for knowledge. Although a single mother, she worked her way through Tri-C and acquired her degree in 1987. Regardless of where she worked, she always seems to be advocating for the Latino community; spending countless hours interpreting and translating for various families, clients, and individuals whenever the need arose.

About the campaign

We would like this scholarship to support anyone struggling to pursue their educational dreams in the fields of Nursing or Social Services.

About the charity

For nearly four decades, Esperanza has zealously worked to help Hispanic youth make educational gains that will set the foundation for a successful future. Through culturally competent educational support services, social-emotional learning, and leadership development, we remove obstacles that if not addressed, often lead to generational poverty and low educational attainment. Our students know, understand, and leverage their potential, and parents not only have the tools to help their student succeed, but are given tools - such as free ESL classes at multiple skill levels - to help themselves succeed. Ultimately, these efforts lead to not only thriving students, adults and families but thriving communities.
