Marathon for Macmillan Mattress.
At the beginning of 2017 my father John Wallace
sadly passed away after spending the last nine weeks of his life in the local
Macmillan Ward.
As a family, we will be eternally grateful for the
care and attention the Doctors, Nurses and Auxiliary staff gave Dad and in additional
the emotional support they were to us as a family.
As a result of Dad’s condition his mobility was
restricted. For the last few weeks he was unable to move without assistance. One
evening I was complementing the nursing staff as Dad had not developed any
bedsores. The nurse explained this was partly due to the excellent 24-hour
nursing attention that he was receiving and the specialised mattresses they
have access to, which need replaced regularly at a cost of £4000.
After Dad died myself and Chris decided we would
like to give something back to show the families appreciation. On the 28th May Chris
and I plan to run the Edinburgh Marathon and have set up this Just Giving
Page to raise money to go towards a new mattress.
The Macmillan Unit in Kirkwall is so much more than
a hospital ward, as a family we were all made to feel so welcome there and could
visit John at anytime and say goodbye to him after each visit knowing that he
would never be alone.
We would be grateful for any donations received on
this Just Giving Page, no matter how small it will all go towards supporting
the local Macmillan Ward in Kirkwall.
Chris and I will no doubt have Dad in our thoughts
as we run the route. As he would have said ‘ Beuy that’s an afa long way.’
