Story

So I’m strapping myself to the wings of a 460 horse power bi-plane and flying through the sky doing deep dives, steep climbs and more. Here’s why...

I’m sure most of you are aware that my grandparents have been more like my parents for the majority of my life and unfortunately, after 3 and a half years battling lung cancer, my Grandad passed away in November. Throughout his fight my Nan was his absolute rock, standing by his side through thick and thin and I would support and help them in every way possible.

Things changed when the week of my Grandads funeral my Nan collapsed and following numerous tests, she was shortly diagnosed with Kidney cancer. We were treating this with full plan to hold the cancer at bay, however, the cancer spread and became very aggressively heartbreakingly taking our Nan less than 7 months after our Grandad. Our whole world has been thrown upside down by this disease.

I wouldn’t have survived or continue to be surviving this time if it wasn’t for Mary Ann Evans Hospice and their support. Whilst I cared for my Nan at home they provided a hospice at home service where they would visit us each day and showed nothing but love and respect to my Nan right until her last day. The nurses were so understanding and supportive to me too, checking in every day how I was coping. And back during my Grandads fight, he attended Mary Ann Evans Hospice who provided a day hospice service for him. Keeping him young, offering respite for him and my Nan, sending him home with lovely flowers and cakes for her. They kept him dancing, laughing, singing, joking.. The list goes on.

They’re even now providing me with free bereavement counselling to help me come to terms with both losses.. It really is a fantastic charity.

As you can see, Mary Ann Evans offer a range of support services from counselling to day hospice to end of life care and they require a lot of money each year to be able to provide this to families like mine. Only 25% of their funding comes from the NHS and they need our help.

Over the last 7 months I have become aware of quite how common Cancer is becoming and the way it can effect the sufferer and those who love them. Although research is very very important, services such as these that support families like mine are a necessity and I want to help other receive this much needed service.

I want to help anyone who may be in this position in the future to get through such a hard time with the support of such fantastic nurses and facilities.

Anything you can give to help families in a difficult time would be amazing 💗xx
