Emma's Cycling the Paddington Bear Trail

Cycling the Paddington Bear Trail · 3 November 2014
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page raising money to find a cure for Type One Diabetes. I aim to cycle to see and photograph (maybe even a few selfies) every Paddington Bear in London. The Trail opens on 4th November and closes on the 30th December. Details are here: http://www.visitlondon.com/paddington/about-paddington-trail
As most of you know, my lovely daughter Stephanie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (an auto-immune disease) last year. It's a potentially life-threatening condition and Steph has to work hard at keeping her blood sugar levels in check. Too low and she risks collapsing and having a seizure, too high and she risks developing diabetic ketoacidosis. Type 1 is a condition of numbers - glucose levels, carbohydrate counting and insulin ratios which needs to be managed 24 hours a day...that includes me setting the alarm throughout the night to check her blood!
There has been a lot in the media recently about potential cures...these are still a long way off. The artificial pancreas seems to be the closest to being available soon (we know a couple of children who have had one in the trial stages), but for the moment we are waiting funding for her to have a pump which costs approximately £400 per month. This would replace her 4-5 per day injections.
For World Diabetes Day (typeonesie day) last year I cycled to work in a onesie to raise money for JDRF. This year it won't be practical to do the same so I wondered how else I could raise some money - cycle to see the Paddington Bears. I love Paddington! And cycling!
There are currently 19000 diabetics (type 2 account for c.85% of this number) under Croydon Healthcare Trust, 110 of which are people under the age of 18 with type 1. Please help to fund the research to find a cure.
Thank you so much for reading.
Love, Emma x
