Story
When Vicky Hughes found her beloved dog, Emma, collapsed on the floor, she didn’t think twice about rushing her to the vet. An MRI scan confirmed the six-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux had suffered a prolapsed spinal disc and needed six hours of emergency surgery in order to save her life.
The operation was successful and after nearly a week of aftercare at the vet’s, Emma returned home to Vicky and Sophie, her six-year-old Bulldog, who has missed her sister terribly.
Vicky said, “Emma is the happiest little girl. She loves to play and roll around on the ground, and she runs around like a Whippet. Emma and Sophie are very close and it was very hard for them to be apart when Emma was recovering, but the staff at the vet’s have been amazing.”
Emma had to take it slowly at home but all was well. And then came the shock.
When Vicky called the insurance company to which she pays £24 a month for both girls, she was told the small print said spinal injuries weren’t covered under the policy, despite no claims ever being made for Emma before. Vicky was left with a bill totalling £3,282, including £900 for the MRI and a £1,067 operating fee.
To raise the funds, Vicky has sold many of her possessions including her fridge, freezer, shoes and clothes. Tailwaggers Club Trust has pledged £500 towards the cost of Emma’s bill, and Emma’s family and friends have donated too, meaning she has £1,000 still to raise.
