Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 21st July 2014, I received a liver transplant that saved my life.
I'd been in Portugal working as a sports therapist for the Welsh athletics team when I suffered acute liver failure. The doctors still don't really know why my liver failed, but after rushing me to hospital with stabbing pains in my abdomen, I went downhill….fast. One week, three operations and a new liver later, I came out of my coma in a Lisbon hospital with my mum and husband next to me.
As soon I was able to access the internet, I started to find out about Transplant Sport, and the amazing work they do in raising awareness of organ transplantation, as well as encouraging organ transplant patients to be fit, active and lead a healthy life. I was so lucky to receive a donor liver in Portugal, but this was helped by the fact they have an 'opt-out' system over there. In the UK, it's the opposite, and anyone who wishes their organs to be used needs to sign the organ donor register. Please sign up today!!! www.organdonation.nhs.uk
One of my big aims is to compete at the World Transplant Games in Argentina. Before my transplant, I was training five times a week and am the current 100m Midland Champion. Because of the time spent in a coma and the inability to eat or exercise, I lost 15kg, as well as the ability to walk. The physiotherapists in Portugal got me back on my feet, and now it's up to me to get back into my spikes.
The trip is completely self funded, so any donations to help me realise my dream of being a world champion would be massively appreciated. I am also fund raising to assist with the costs of taking my mum and husband, Gareth, out to Argentina to support me. If anything, they went through more than me. 20 years to the month after my dad died of cancer, my mum was told (multiple times) that her daughter was dying, and was comforted by my husband of only ten months. They were by my side every day for 5 weeks in a foreign country, and I can't wait to put on my GB vest in a stadium for them, as well as in memory of my donor.
The legal bit…
"I am raising funds to cover my expenses associated with attending the World Transplant Games in Argentina, South America. Any surplus funds will go towards the Transplant Sport UK Management Team (including physios and coaches) who give up their time to support the team"
Any donation, big or small, will be greatly appreciated, and you can keep up to date with all my progress, whether it be training, fundraising, or just living my life to the full here: http://transplantathlete.blogspot.co.uk
