I pondered over what I should do for the Anthony Nolan Trust…and came up with swimming with sharks. Don’t ask me why!! I will be swimming in the company of nine sharks on 5 September in an aquarium in sunny
So why am I doing this you may ask…
Well, my young cousin Jamie was diagnosed in 2005 with Fanconi anaemia - a genetic blood disease which makes him prone to infections, bleeding, fatigue, haemorrhaging and cancer. He has a very rare tissue type and it would have been hard for the doctors to find a suitable donor.
It took three and a half years to find a donor for Jamie (due to his rare tissue type), and the Spanish male donor was found in July 2008. Jamie then went on to have a successful bone marrow transplant in October 2008 at GOSH. Unfortunately, due to Jamie's underlying condition of Fanconi Anaemia, he relapsed in March this year, and has since had a Stem Cell Transplant and gene therapy, all thanks again to the same Spanish male donor!
In April 2008 The Anthony Nolan Trust very kindly set up a donor clinic at Jamie's Primary School offering parents etc to attend to do a blood test to see if anyone was a match. The donor clinic was set up as a way of thanks from The Anthony Nolan Trust for the money and awareness that was raised during the Charity Walk that myself, friends and family done in Nov 2006 across .
Jamie is a very loving and happy boy. He is so brave after everything he has been through and has to still go through. I am truly in awe of him and our family all gain much inspiration from him.
This is a brilliant charity and I would be so grateful for any support you can offer-however large or small!
