*please note - this money is a direct donation to Kenyan Orphan project. It's not paying for our trip out there!*
We are Emily Cottrell and Claire Thwaites and we are current 3rd year medical students at the . We are currently aiming to raise money for the Kenyan Orphanage Project (KOP). KOP was started in 2001 by 3 medical students with the vision to fight against poverty, disease, social exclusion and injustice and to help improve the lives of orphans and vulnerable children in . Since then more than 650 students from different medical schools have been helping to support KOP projects.
Funds raised by us this year (£750 each) will pay for school fees for 15 street children in primary education, 10 in secondary education and vocational training for a further 10 children. This year KOP funds will also allow provision of two meals a day at weekends for 100 street children. In late July we will be heading out to in order to support HOVIC (Hope for Victoria Children). This is a project in the centre of Kisumu town that offers shelter and food for some of the many street children; providing a refuge away from the violence and drug abuse that is rampant on the streets of Kisumu. HOVIC provides access to the basic means of survival; clean water, two meals per day, healthcare, education and support. HOVIC aims to provide children with an alternative to life on the streets, into foster homes, schools and jobs. (Please see http://kopafrica.org/Index.htm for more information). We have been raising money through numerous bake sales, half marathons, and trawling the streets of with charity buckets! However we have a significant amount of money still to raise so we would greatly appreciate any donation great or small that you could offer us. You can donate online through this page, indulge in one of our delicious cakes or help fill our buckets at the upcoming medics scrubs pubcrawl!! Thanks very much to you all Emily and Claire
