Story
Last summer was a little different to what I had originally planned…..
In place of work, cycling, hill walking and scuba diving; I inadvertently gave heart failure a go.
While all a bit sudden and unexpected, the NHS were kind enough to treat me to a 3 month holiday in hospital. Along with practicing breathing it also gave me the opportunity to explore the world’s major religions. Admittedly the reasons were more culinary than spiritual.
During my attempts to avoid the standard hospital gruel I was lucky enough to get an L-VAD. Basically an electric drive buried in my chest. To keep it whirring I get to carry a couple of car batteries and a motor controller about. All very ‘on message’ for those that know what I do for work! I’m half assured this will keep me going until a heart transplant is possible.
Tradition dictates that I must now do something mildly challenging for a heart charity. So what better way to road test the new implant then commit to a coast to coast bike ride.
I’ve joined the electric cranks and will be cycling between Anglesey and Chester. Then, partly due to my inability to use s diary properly, I’m straight off to do the Yorkshire Wolds Challenge. Overall some 280 miles in 5 days.Since I’ve temporarily transitioned to cyborg I do need a little help up the hills so will be using an electric assist bike. Before you shout ‘cheat’, I still have to pedal and there’s some blinking big hills in the north!
All donations will be very much appreciated and will go to the New Start Charity. They support the transplant centre at Wythenshawe Hospital with equipment which would not otherwise be provided. They are a life saving charity (as I can attest to!), so both they and I will be very grateful for your support.
Thanks
Luca

Once you donate, JustGiving will send your money directly to the charity. Reportedly this is the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
JustGiving promise they'll never sell your details or send unwanted emails. They have an army of cycling cyborgs monitoring them. Any infringement will be met with an electrically assisted visit to persuade them of the futility of their actions. Oh and no need to pay any additional platform contributions. Their admin fees are already covered.
